Having read a biography of Dr Robert Hooke and while currently reading one on Sir Christopher Wren (On A Grander Scale) I felt the need to look for more information regarding the Monument to the Great Fire of London. It's so nice to see it being refurbished with such care...an historic treasure that shouldn't be lost. And most people have no idea of the scientific use that was made of it after it was first built. You have a wonderful website...thanks for sharing it with others.

I am 7 years old and at my school Ackworth Howards we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. I am very interested in it and very keen to see the Monument. At our school we had a visit from Sir William who told us all about the Great Fire. My mum and dad are going to take me on a trip to see the Monument and can't wait until it opens again after the work has been done. I am really looking forward to it.

What a wonderful project and a wonderful building. The Monument is my favourite London building. I was born and lived just across the river and have fond memories of making my grandad climbed to the top at least twice a week when my brother and I were children. I have climbed it hundreds of times. I think the entrance fee was 2d (about 1p). I still take my wife, daughter and also my non-London work colleagues and friends up whenever we visit London. I am terrified of heights and have to keep my back firmly against the wall at all times but I wouldn't stop climbing. I am looking forward to the re-opening. Keep up the good work. Peter

I am doing an assessed essay on The Monument for my course, and though I have not visited it yet, I think it is wonderful. I love the design of it, and its history. I think the work that is being done on it is brilliant, and I love the fact that we can read the details of how its done. I never knew it was all so complicated! I really can't wait to vist The Monument!

Probably London's most under-estimated landmark, it is wonderful to see it being looked after so carefully.

My favourite building in London. I've visited lots of London's attractions but the Monument is the only one that I keep going back to. I try to go every time I visit London. Went in October and was gutted to see it closed, but I'll definitely be there as soon as the renovation work is completed. I could stand and watch the ever changing scenery of the best city in the world all day long and not get bored. Certainly beats being shut in a little bubble on the Eye!

I now check this site daily for any news and am impressed with the detail in which the works are being shown. As I said in a previous post, I have a great affection for the Monument and it appears that all connected with the project share this. Well done all and keep up the good work. (how I envy you)

I enjoyed working at The Monument for almost ten years from 1997. I met some interesting people during my time there but some needed more help than others. I had to explain to quite a number that it was not the Tower of London or a tube station or a toilet! Some people believed that they could see the Eiffel Tower when they spotted the Crystal Palace aerial. I also was asked whether the Monument was built before or after the fire and I shall never forget the woman who, when informed that there was no lift up to the top, asked me whether there was a lift down.

I am lucky enough to be working on this wonderful building and can tell you that it will look fantastic when it is finished, inside and out. Me and my fellow workmates are learning different things every day about its history and its overall structure. We feel very lucky to be able to work on parts of the building that may not have been touched since 1677! (some countries are younger than that!) Anyway, back to work.

While I am more than happy for the Monument to be restored, I am somewhat worried that it will be 'modernized' too much. My father was head attendant there for a number of years, and was always concerned about it after he retired and until his death. Please, please don't overdo it with modern technology. It's such a beautiful building.

The Monument has always been something of great affection to me, having been there a number of times in my childhood and to have seen from the platform the views of London before the city was rebuilt in the sixties. I am glad to see that is certainly not being neglected.

As a Londoner born and bred, living within a mile of the monument I am ashamed to say I have never climbed it but in my youth often walked around the district and enjoyed every step of the way. Unfortunately I think I will be too old for the climb when it opens again. It is good to see our heritage being looked after.

It is some years since I did the tourist thing and went up the Monument. The last renovations lasted about 120 years and it is good to see it is still being well looked after by the City.

One of my very favourite public buildings in this great city. I have long been fascinated by the lesser known parts of the structure, namely the laboratory below and the interior of the guilded urn above and am looking forward to finding out more about both. Good luck with your project

I climbed first when I was doing my six mile hike for my Guide First Class badge, probably in about 1961. I'd walked form the Albert Hall to St Pauls for that. I'll try again when it's finished, if I've got the energy!!!

I first visited the monument 3rd September 1997 with my sister in law, and took in total 7 nieces and Nephews. We paid only 50p each and somehow the youngest child aged 7 ended up with two certificates to prove she climbed all the steps. [No idea how she managed that scam!] The visit was the highlight of our day and each visitor was in a jovial mood and everyone spoke to people they did not even know; we were all gasping for breath as we were going up and down the steps. we vowed to return on the tenth anniversary and repeat this: alas today I discovered it is closed for refurbishment, but I am sure it is worth the inconvenience if it means our national treasure will be preserved for many more generations to come. I await the 20th Annivesrary and we vow to return, God willing! E H Langtry

I can remember (over 30 years ago) climbing and counting the steps with my sister and arriving at a different number and having to re-count them on the way down to see who was right!

The Monument is one of London's most famous icons that I make a point of visiting at least once a year. Standing below this colossal structure, stretching high in to the clouds, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle! Although the view is magnificent, I crave the steep climb of the 311 steps (especially as they become to narrow nearer the sumit!). It has hardly been touched since it was built, 340 years ago, and it is like a time machine. You can imagine Wren and Hook swinging their huge pendulum and taking their measurements! I look forward to seeing it in its new polished glory!

The monument is one of those magical places from history & formed a major impact on my childhood with regard to a facination with London, I remember as a 9yr old counting all 311 steps, that's over 40 years ago now, & I look forward to, after the works being completed, coming to London & counting the steps again.
