The Monument reopens
The painters start the redecoration of the old softwood timber inside the Monument
Work on the restoration of the Monument to the Great Fire of London nears completion
Carpenters start to dismantle the site hoarding
The historic iron railings are now back at the Monument and are being re fitted
The metalwork specialists work with the stone masons to safely unload the historic ironwork as it returns to site
Stonemasons carry out final pointing to the junction of the steps and walls inside the Monument
Specialist lead workers pour molten lead into the pockets around the iron balusters
The new oak entrance door is fitted and work continues on the steps inside the Monument
The new yorkstone front entrance step is now laid. This one stone weighs 1,750 Kg
Metal conservation specialists fit the historic iron balusters to the spiral staircase.
Works are now well under way in the compound area and around the base of the Monument.
A trench has been dug so that cables can be laid to supply telephone, computer & fire alarm systems into the Monument.
10th December 2008
The last few steps are now ready to have the new stone inserts fitted and work is underway to remove the concrete bases that the scaffold has stood on.
4th December 2008
The scaffolding has now been dismantled. Over the next few days the steel joists and the concrete base will be removed.

The fantastic carvings above the pedestal slowly come into view as the scaffold is removed.
18th November 2008
Foreman stonemason Lewis prepares a very awkwardly shaped stone which will fill a hole above the entrance door. Originally there was a lamp positioned here.
13th November 2008
The Belzona works get underway and CWO stonemason Keith carefully carries out mortar restoration work to one of the original dragon wings.
11th November 2008
Preparations are under way for the Belzona works at the base of the shaft. Belzona is a resin based product which can be used in place of lead flashings.
4th November 2008
The scaffold removal is now under way revealing some of the magnificently restored masonry as well as the new gilding to the orb and the fantastic new viewing gallery cage.
