A stonemason applying a mortar bed to the top of the Paterae before fixing

A mechanical lift with bags of soft sponge to protect the carving
from damage is used to lift the Paterae into position

After the Paterae has been lifted into place the stainless steel
retaining nut and washer is tightened by hand

After the bolt has been hand tightened the masons giveĀ it a final "nip" with a spanner. The bolts cannot be over tight as this would fracture the stone

The stonemason checks to make sure the fixings
are snug into the rebated stone

The specialist metalworkers are fixing a temporary jig into
position to ensure that all the holes that need
to be drilled at the top of the new cage
are in exactly the right position

The position of the jig indicates where the top of the new cage will be

With the jig in place the metalworkers can start drilling
their fixing holes for the new cage

A tape measure is used to keep a check on the depth of the
holes for the cage fixings
